![]() I have read "A Wanted Man," #17, but have not yet read "Killing Floor," #1. Jack Reacher is alone and on the road until he is called back into action by the military, being the only one who can stop a killer who has taken an interest in the president of Dyhouse: I agree. Whatever else is wrong with it, you can trust your brother soldiers. He has his work cut out for him, and the action doesn't stop until the last page. This particular novel follows the events in 61 Hours, when Jack is trying to find Major Susan Turner, his new commanding officer, without any luck. Jack Reacher is back in action and depicted in the same style we know and expect from Lee Child. I've fallen for the trap before, yet I keep buying them. I love Lee Child's novels, but somehow the novellas, due to their short size probably, just can't achieve what the larger novels do. Not A Drill is a short novella, spanning only 52 pages, which is squeezed between Never Go Back and Personal. While this is a great read, I do agree with other readers that at times the repetitive plot can become a bit stale. This happiness is disrupted, though, when a band of thugs locate him. All he wants is a cup of coffee, but, otherwise, he's quite happy. This time walking on an empty road between two desolate towns because he can't find a ride. “Now they broke my toothbrush, I don't own anything.”Īs usual we find Jack Reacher alone. ![]() Jack seems a bit more mellow and soft compared to his character in previous novels. He meets up with a few of his old teammates to investigate why their friend was killed and why others from their squad have disappeared.įor some reason, this book didn't grab me as much as the others. One of his old team members has been thrown out of a helicopter, leaving Reacher no option but to get involved. Jack Reacher is alone again and couldn't be happier, but this solitude doesn't last long. Sure, the story is a bit predictable, but it's just as enjoyable as Child's first novel. No stranger to violence, he uses expertise and charm to solve the puzzle. In this novel he is quietly sipping espresso at a café when he's dragged into solving a kidnapping case. ![]() Trouble always finds Reacher, especially when he's not looking for it. But Jack Reacher is yet again at his best, following leads, solving crimes and being his adorable, gloomy self. While the killer is easily found, he pleads not guilty, creating difficulties for the prosecution. He must find a sniper who has ruthlessly killed five people at random. But his stay in paradise doesn't last long. He spends his time enjoying the sun and beaches of Miami with a gorgeous blonde by his side. In this novel Reacher is finally on vacation. ![]() This book is full of non-stop action, and makes for a fun and fast read. Jack gets involved with the hope of solving the case. While the cause of death is apparently a heart attack, it seems there's more to the story than meets the eye. The year is 1990 and a general is found dead in a hotel room in North Carolina. The Enemy takes place before the events in Killing Floor. It starts a bit slow, but as it picks up the pace there are twists and turns at every corner. This is yet another book you simply can't put down. To kill him for good, our hero has to go undercover. Reacher thought he had eliminated him many years ago, but it seems he was wrong.

![]() The setting, quests, character interactions and crime system are all heavily influenced by this fact.īesides the above, the series (particularly the first two games) has been praised for its general dedication to immersion in various ways, especially in terms of sound design, flora and fauna, and Artificial Atmospheric Actions, its rough, dark, cynical, and rogueish, yet still quite witty, playful, and highly quotable take on fantasy writing, and, arguably, being an early, very prototypical example of what would later come to be known as the Souls-like RPG formula. system which applies to both NPCs and the player, meaning there is a large and tangible difference between a tavern brawl or robbery on one hand and cold-blooded murder or a fight to the death on the other. Gothic is based much more on character skill than most RPGs with real time combat, with a weak PC being unable to make any damage on a strong enemy.Ĭombat, additionally, utilizes a simple but effective Non-Lethal K.O. Armor also matters a great deal and, with the exception of a few early pieces that are simply bought, is linked with quest progress. The hero's skill is also a much greater effect on combat than just speed or damage at low levels he is visibly inept at weapon use, being slow, predictable and frequently stumbling, while as skill increases, new abilities in combat are gained, movement is more fluid, and fumbles are lessened. Basic abilities like raising an attribute typically have free, easy to locate, trainers (at least for low levels), while trainers for more esoteric abilities (such as lock picking) may be limited to a small handful that require a quest to learn from and higher skill levels generally require faction specific trainers. To spend these skill points the player must seek out trainers. Only hit points increase on their own at level up, while the player gains skill points as well. The world, however, is exactly as promised: within the limits of the magical barrier surrounding the colony (or the sea serpents/mountains in the 2nd game), exploration is rewarded with beautifully detailed scenery, complete with weather, and many hidden items.Īnother notable draw of Gothic is the method of character advancement. Gothic's main draw was its wide open world and the ability to 'choose' in the plot, although this really came down to just picking one of three camps for the first half of the game, as you are railroaded back into the central plot eventually. Through songs such as her remix of 50 Cent’s “Hate it or Love It,” Mary teaches us that in such situations, we always get to choose how much we are willing to be affected by other people’s opinions or attitudes. Sometimes it is not possible to eliminate negativity because it is coming from a family member or colleague, for example. “Hate it or love it the underdog’s on top and I’m gone shine, homie, until my heart stops” They are, however, also wise enough to know when the “drama” is coming from within (through things like fear, self-doubt or negative self-talk) and so will do the inner work needed to shake those things off to progress as well. This is because they’ve battled through too much to make their businesses what they are today to let another person destroy it with negativity. In songs such as “No More Drama”, Mary is teaching us that strong business women refuse to tolerate negative entities. They also honour their dreams by going for them. This knowledge of self may have been hard won- especially if it was something that they didn’t always have- but, once it’s developed, it is what guides their business practices. Through songs like “Happy,” Mary shows us that part of the reason strong business women are able to be so authentic is because they know what makes them…well…happy! Not only that, these women have developed goals so, they know what they want to achieve in future.
Their subject matter covers various aspects of Solange’s Black American experience in Houston, from the mundane to the divine. ![]() The lyrics across the board on Home are sparse, which only seems to magnify their gravity when repeated. When she repeatedly chants, “Black skin, Black braids, Black waves, Black days… These are Black-owned things… Black faith still can’t be washed away… Not even in that Florida water,” on “Almeda” - named after a neighborhood in Houston - it is reminiscent of a prayer. When she trills on the opener, “I grew up a little girl with dreams… dreams… dreams… dreams… I saw things I imagined,” she convinces us she really did. Lyrics are often repeated, and during a live-streamed presentation on Black Planet, Solange discussed the importance of such repetition, and how something you say to yourself grows stronger in power each time. Beginnings and endings are experimented with so that you think you’re listening to one song, only to find it has shifted into another. Can it be pushed until the cumulative pieces, linked by interludes and audio that feed directly into one-another, are just one long melody? Home boasts an impressive 19-song tracklist, but clocks in at a succinct 39 minutes. Many of the tracks push what can be done in terms of song structure, and question how far the concept of a ‘song’ can be deconstructed. ![]() This could easily be considered an experimental jazz album with undertones of rap, r&b, funk, gospel, country and screw ( a Houston-specific sub-genre of rap where songs are slowed down). Jazz, however, is by far the most prominent stylistic choice. The gun-clicks of gangsta rap are utilized alongside gospel church organs, jazz pianos, and Minneapolis funk guitars, an example of how the genres present on Home are ever shifting. Sprinkled liberally through the album in the form of breaks and hooks is the inclusion of audio from her life and time recording the album in Houston, making it a piece where you hear the finished work and the process of making it all at once. Verses, chords and tones all repeat and overlap, along with occasional static that resembles the sound of an old television changing stations. There is virtually no album structure on Home, as two-minute ‘songs’ bleed into minute-and-a-half ‘interludes,’ interspersed with clips of recorded audio from Solange and her friends as well as cribbed from online videos and poetry. If that sounds abstract, it’s because it is - when Solange won her first Grammy, for “Cranes In The Sky” off 2016’s critically acclaimed A Seat At The Table, she expressed the importance of Black women creating avant-garde art. Similar to how we are viewing places important to Solange’s childhood in the present-day when we watch the live stream, the album, set and recorded in Houston, listens like a futuristic archive of her memories of growing up. I t was accompanied by a reintroduction of early 2000’s Black social network ‘ Black Planet,’ where you can sign up for an account, create a profile, and even watch a 24-hour live stream showcasing interviews and places Solange grew up in and finds meaningful in Houston, Texas. But Solange elevates it to high art with Home, a thought-provoking concept album that’s as much video installation and interactive performance piece as music. A method originally pioneered by her sister, mega-superstar Beyoncé, many other artists have since adopted the technique of the ‘surprise drop,’ eschewing the popular single. Announced on the last day of Black History Month, Solange Knowles’ fourth studio album, When I Get Home, surprise released at midnight as a digital drop and experimental short film. |
